    Position Announcement

    The Department of Counseling Psychology and Human Services (CPHS) in the University of Oregon's (UO) College of Education (COE) is seeking applications for a tenure-line faculty position in health promotion at the assistant professor rank. The successful candidate will have a record or evidence of potential for strong teaching, research, and service focused on the broad disciplines of sport and wellness, health promotion, physical health, and/or mental health. The intersections between mental health and physical health are especially relevant. The individual in this position will train the next generation of community leaders in addressing complex physical health/sport and mental well-being with innovative and applied solutions that promote health equity in community settings. This is an innovative and integrative area of potential growth for the university given the UO's excellence in all three areas (sports and wellness, mental health, prevention research), combined with the nationwide need for an increased workforce who understands and can provide mental health supports.

    The successful candidate's primary instructional duties will be in the Family and Human Services undergraduate program, with participation in graduate training across the department, including the Couples and Family Therapy program, Prevention Science programs, and the Counseling Psychology program, depending on the candidate's experience, expertise, and interest. Students who pursue a degree in the undergraduate Family and Human Services program help support the health and well-being of communities, families, and individuals through the development of prevention programs and through direct advocacy and delivery of services. Reflecting the diversity of the community and social service sector, FHS is interdisciplinary, drawing on the fields of psychology/counseling, social work, prevention science, public health, human development, and sociology.

    This position will interface with the University of Oregon Sport and Wellness Initiative, a multi-disciplinary group of faculty and leaders focused on extending the University of Oregon's already strong reputation and leadership in the field by delivering a new model of transdisciplinary education and research that recognizes the integrated nature of sport and wellness fields (https://sportwellness.uoregon.edu/).

    Successful candidates will lead research teams with graduate and undergraduate students, develop research partnerships with communities, train undergraduate and graduate students in current, cutting-edge topics and methodologies that will advance physical and mental health, and engage in department, university, community, state, and national service.

    The position start date is September 16, 2024.

    Minimum Requirements

  • Earned doctoral degree (by time of appointment) in Prevention Science, Public Health, Human Development and Family Studies, Psychology, Human Physiology, Sociology, Counseling Psychology, Social Work, or a closely related field.
  • Record of or evidence of potential for strong scholarly productivity.
  • Demonstrated capacity or potential to conduct, administer, and sustain a rigorous program of research.
  • Record of or strong interest in working with underserved and underrepresented populations, including addressing disproportionate poor health outcomes among marginalized groups using an applied prevention and public health lens.

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Record of, or evidence of potential, to obtain external research funding, particularly through federal funding agencies.
  • Record of, or strong potential for, mentorship and/or supervision of student research.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and collegially in department, college, university, and community settings.
  • Demonstrated ability, or potential to engage in transdisciplinary research.
  • Ability to teach in our accredited graduate programs, including Counseling Psychology and Couples and Family Therapy.
