Position Summary:
Student Affairs provides strategic leadership and advice in the development and implementation of systemwide policy and practice related to freshman and transfer admissions, undergraduate and graduate campus life, and student financial support.

Reporting to the Vice President, the Director - Student Mental Health and Well-Being serves as the systemwide resource for best practices, regulatory and statutory requirements, licensing requirements and accreditation standards in the area of student mental health policy and practice. The Director utilizes advanced, specialized expertise to manage a diverse portfolio of systemwide research, planning, development, and training programs and initiatives to address student health and well-being at three levels: Tier I) Access to direct services and urgent care needs, Tier II) Targeted interventions and outreach to vulnerable populations, and Tier III) Development of healthier learning environments/stigma reduction. The Director operates in a highly visible, politically sensitive, legally complex and evolving arena to resolve complex policy issues, and deals with highly sensitive student and campus records and information. The Director collaborates with leaders and stakeholders in UC Health, Risk Services, and State and Federal Governmental Relations to respond to key initiatives related to student health and well-being. The Director collaborates with UC campuses and other education sectors to develop and improve the policy framework for student mental health, and the processes, procedures, and services that advance student success. Supervises professional and student intern staff in the provisioning of stakeholder services.

Duties
Serves as the organization expert for mental health and wellness policy, practice and initiatives. Advises the Vice President and other executive leaders on student mental health policy issues. Oversees systemwide mental health collaboration and evaluation of services and outcomes.

Identifies and facilitates the use of best/promising practices related to mental health and wellness across the 10 UC campuses. Offers expertise on how to assess and enhance cultural competencies of clinical interventions, trainings, and services. Develops and maintains complex and sensitive relationships with external mental health stakeholders (partner institutions, county/government agencies, non-profit organizations, etc.). Identifies and pursues opportunities for conference presentations, publications, and recognition for the University.

Pursues funding opportunities and leads grant proposal development to bring additional resources to the University to address mental health and wellness needs.


Job Requirements
PhD in related field and 3-5 years of increasingly responsible work experience in clinical/ counseling psychology, social work, sociology, health education, or closely related field.

Advanced knowledge in student mental health clinical care, outreach, prevention, early intervention, and management of sensitive information and data.

Demonstrated ability to focus on key issues, research, gather and integrate information and participate with others across organizational lines (UC campuses and non-UC entities/agencies) in developing a wide range of qualified resources and data as the basis for formulating recommendations.

Demonstrated success in working with diverse populations (race/ ethnicity/ gender/ sexual orientation/ nationality/ ability status/ SES/ etc.). Sensitive to cultural differences and implications for health care.

Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving, identifying measures of performance for staff and the actions to improve performance.

Advanced skills in all levels of project management. Proven track record supporting policy development and implementation that effectively furthers an institution's goals.

Demonstrated ability to be proactive, creative and innovative in solving problems and issues. Ability to develop original ideas to solve problems.

Ability to use discretion and maintain all confidentiality.

Advanced training in quantitative and qualitative data analysis and reporting.

Excellent oral communication skills which demonstrate the ability to effectively convey and explain information and tactfully deal with diverse populations, situations, and ideas. Strong oral communication skills to communicate with senior management, and lead and direct subordinates.

Excellent written communication skills which demonstrate the ability to draft clear, concise specifications, documentation, analytical reports; editing and proofreading training and resource materials.

Knowledge of principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.

Experience managing social media, web-based applications, and various electronic media formats.

Moderate to advanced knowledge of University-specific computer application programs such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, Outlook, Adobe, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Cascade.

Experience in sponsored project post-award grant administration.
